FAQ’s
What is Horizons at St. Richard’s?
Horizons mission is to address education equity in Indianapolis by providing inspiring learning opportunities outside of school through a joyful, high-quality program and a long-term commitment to partner with students and families. We provide a free summer program for children in PreK - 8th grade whose families qualify for free and reduced lunches. We also provide year-round support, activities, and resource-connection to families. Horizons fundraises all dollars used to run our out-of-school time program that inspires children every summer.
What is a St. Andre Project?
It is a project that all juniors and seniors at Cathedral High School must complete as a requirement before graduation to connect them with their community and encourage community service. Students come up with their own creative way to help a cause or group of people and make a positive impact.
Why did Coby choose to host a fun run for her project and donate proceeds to Horizons at St. Richard’s?
Running is something Coby loves to do. She stared running track and cross-country as a middle school student at St. Richard’s. Her passion for running continued into high school. Coby is a member of the Cathedral Cross-Country Team. She decided to incorporate her passion for running into her St. Andre Project. Coby wanted to support Horizons at St. Richard’s because she attended St. Richard’s and wanted to contribute to Horizons mission of providing joyful learning opportunities for students.
How will the fun run work?
Participants will start the morning at the check-in table. The check-in table will be located right inside the dragon gate on 33rd Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania. Look for the balloons to the east of the green dragon awning. Participants will receive their t-shirt and map of the course at the check-in table. Check-in begins at 8:45am and will run until 9:10am.
At 9:15am, the run/walk will begin. Participants will follow a course that runs through and around St. Richard’s. Chalk and cones will indicate the route of the course.
1K participants will complete one loop as part of their route. The course includes running on pavement, a grass field, and mulch.
3K participants will run the course 3 times as part of their route. The course includes running on pavement, a grass field, and mulch.
There will be 2 COLOR BLAST STATIONS throughout the course. The first color blast station will be located at the halfway point of the 1K. The second blast station will be located at the end of the 1K. Those individuals running the 3K will have the opportunity to be blasted with color up to 6 times! If you prefer not to be colored, an alternate path will be available.
Once you have crossed the finish line, there will be opportunities for each child to take pictures and play games for prizes in celebration of their accomplishment. Light snacks and water will be available at the finish.
The fun run/walk will end at approximately 10am.
How many miles is a 1K? How many miles is a 3K?
A 1K = 0.62 miles, so just over half a mile.
A 3K = 1.8 miles, so just under 2 miles. This is the same distance as a middle school cross country race.
Do I have to run?
No. The goal of this fun run/walk is for you to have fun! You may run the whole race, run part and walk part, or walk the entire race. You do you! Especially since children will be taking part, we expect there to be various speeds and modes of movement throughout the run/walk. If you don’t want to run or walk at all but still want to be part of the fun, feel free to join and cheer on our runners. If you don’t want to run or walk but still want to support, we would happily accept any donation you wish to make.
How long does it take to run a 1K or 3K? How long is the event?
Race times will vary depending on the age and typical physical activity level of the participant. On average, it should take 4 - 12 minutes to run a 1K and 12 - 24 minutes to walk. The 3K will take about triple those times. We are intentional about calling this a fun run and not a race as we will not be timing participants and recording time from start to finish line. The event will be about an hour; however, participants may leave after completing the race.
Who can take part in the fun run?
This is a family-friendly event. Everyone is welcome!
What do you mean by color blast fun run?
A color blast run increases the fun factor for the event! Participants will receive a white shirt that will be blasted with colored powder as participants run through color blast stations. Volunteers will strive to shoot the colored powder at the shirts and mid-sections. Volunteers will try to avoid faces. The colored powder is non-toxic, skin-safe, and biodegradable. It is composed of corn starch, FDA and FD and C-approved dyes, and a pinch of baking soda. The effect after being color blasted is bright, colorful t-shirts. Not only is it fun to be blasted, it looks really cool, too!
Participants may also choose to avoid being color blasted by taking the alternate route.
Will the color blast stain my skin, clothes, or hair?
The colored powder is not permanent. For skin and hair: Shake off all excess powder first. Normal soap and water should remove the color from skin and hair. Some color may linger on blond hair for a few days. If you are worried about staining, make sure to moisturize skin and put coconut oil in hair prior to the event. For clothing: The powder washes out of most clothing but may stain some materials. 100% cotton and black clothing are recommended. Typical machine washing with stain remover, removes stains. It is recommended to remove excess powder before placing in water.
